RESCHEDULED EVENT. The late great cultural theorist Stuart Hall once asked, “what sort of moment are we in?” The moment, he responds, is a post modern moment marked by the centralization of mass mediated pop cultural forms, the United States as a world power and center of global cultural production, and the decolonization of what’s been signified as the so-called “Third World.” However, this moment is not novel. It is conjunctural -- a mixture of both the past and the present. And it is that mixture – of pasts and presences and of pop cultural production and mass mediation – that invites a critical discussion on race, sex, and pop cultural media. What sort of moment are we in? One marked with racially charged pornotropic gazing and complex resistance and participation.
